  • Hello, I'm Dr. Ortiz, one of the doctors on the team.
  • Could I just confirm your full name and date of birth?
  • What brings you in today? (¿Qué le trae por aquí hoy?)
  • How can I help you?

AbiertaCan you tell me more about the pain?Dejar hablar al paciente
DirigidaDoes it spread anywhere?Precisar un síntoma
CerradaHave you vomited?Confirmar o descartar

  1. Where exactly is the pain? (Site)
  2. When did it start? Did it come on suddenly? (Onset)
  3. What does it feel like: sharp, dull, burning or crushing? (Character)
  4. Does the pain move anywhere, like your arm or your jaw? (Radiation)
  5. Have you noticed anything else, like nausea or sweating? (Associated)
  6. Is it constant or does it come and go? (Time course)
  7. Does anything make it better or worse? (Exacerbating/relieving)
  8. On a scale of zero to ten, how bad is it? (Severity)

Frases de apoyo mientras escuchas

I see. Go on, please. So if I've understood correctly, the pain started two days ago. Resumir ("summarising") demuestra que escuchas y evita errores.

Errores típicos de hispanohablantes

  • "I have a pain since two days" es incorrecto. Di: I've had this pain for two days. (present perfect + for).
  • "It hurts me the stomach" es incorrecto. Di: My stomach hurts. o I have a stomach ache.
  • "Since when you have it?" es incorrecto. Di: How long have you had it?
  • "Constipated" significa estreñido, no "resfriado" (eso es to have a cold).

Daniel respira hondo y pregunta: What brings you in today, Mr. Higgins? El paciente responde: "I think I have a rare tropical disease. I read about it online." Daniel sonríe: Let's start with your symptoms, not the internet. A 62-year-old man with a two-day history of epigastric burning pain after meals."

This is a 62-year-old man presenting with a two-day history of chest pain.
